ORLANDO – As the UCF linebacker depth chart shifts.This is what it looks like, as a former UAB linebacker Chris Moore Abandoned his commitment to UCF and now has a different linebacker to play for the Cavaliers with more qualifications and higher upside.
Brandon Jennings Will play for the Cavaliers. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Jennings listed on the Maryland Track and Field website is certainly a traditional interior linebacker in size. Now, when and where does he play for UCF?
The talented Jacksonville, Florida, product signed with the Terrapins, yes, but he also took advantage of a one-time move to Kansas State before entering the transfer portal again and deciding to go with UCF. According to the rules, he cannot qualify immediately because a player has only one chance to qualify immediately after a transfer.
Regardless of initial thinking and/or reporting, the NCAA is a fickle organization. Whether Jennings is ruled eligible this fall, it’s best to get yourself a glimpse of him on the bounce house lawn. He could petition the NCAA. Even after a ruling, the NCAA talks a lot and then often does other things. With that, a few points and thoughts on Jennings’ time at UCF.
First, he could be a long-term replacement for Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste. They are similar in size and definitely have a similar feel to their game. Looking ahead to 2022 (or 2023, if that’s his playing time), Jennings should be in contention for the starting center linebacker spot.
Jennings likes to play against running teams in midfield, just like Jean-Baptiste. Seeing Jennings’ high school movies brought about the concept, and his three starts in Maryland continued it. The 17 solo tackles and 6 assist tackles, 1 missed tackle and 1 forced turnover were all credited to Jennings at Maryland, including 3 starts. It is also possible to use his skills in another way.
Will Jennings play a little on the fringe? Maybe as a third down pass rusher and/or a player who’s always been part of the UCF Blitz pack? At 235 pounds, Jennings certainly has the potential. With many college linebackers playing multiple roles these days, that’s something Jennings needs to consider. It could happen. Finally, assuming he’s eligible for this year’s game, he’s the first man in the linebacker’s woes.
However, if Jennings is not eligible, the Cavaliers will still need at least a few linebackers from the transfer portal and/or existing players on the roster to switch to linebacker. Here’s a depth chart of numbers lost due to key players leaving UCF (Tatum Bethune-FL) and graduating (Bryson Armstrong). Also, when the current UCF staff arrived in Orlando, there wasn’t much depth at the linebacker to begin with. That’s why this remains the position group for the biggest puzzle in 2022.
