Paul McCartney’s current Got Back tour may have nothing to do with a Sir Mix-a-Lot song of the same name, but the legendary Beatles loves big shows and he won’t lie. Following his three “intimate” (read: 12,000-19,000) concerts in Spokane, Seattle and Oakland, on May 13th he touched down at the brand new SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles to a delighted audience of 70,000, This is his first official stadium gig since the COVID-19 pandemic and the first concert of 2022 at the massive Inglewood venue.
“We said we would be back,” he announced Friday. “we are back.”
Of course, the tour’s name is a cheeky nod to Peter Jackson’s epic return Documentary, bringing together 8 hours of mostly never-before-seen footage originally shot for Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s documentary about the Beatles let it be Album; Last Thanksgiving weekend, the three-night Disney+ event sparked countless marathon viewings and reignited fan interest in as much Beatles content as possible. In that spirit, McCartney put the LA crowd on Friday in a marathon of his own, playing 36 songs over nearly three hours, all with the same joyous and witty vibes. present returnstudio impromptu recital.
McCartney turns 80 next month (just two days after his New Jersey tour), and he’s understandably in a mood of longing and contemplation. Maybe that’s to be expected for a man who didn’t apologize for writing stupid love songs, but this time, such moments were different. In McCartney’s classic ballad “Maybe I’m Surprised” for his late first wife Linda, SoFi’s big screen flashed a famous black-and-white 1969 photo by Linda of Paul hugging Their youngest daughter, Marie – then mused to the crowd in surprise: “The baby in my jacket now has four babies of his own.”
He also paid tribute to his late bandmates by playing George Harrison’s most popular ballad “Something” on the ukulele (an instrument Harrison loved to play) while showing a montage of photos George and Paul flashed on the video screen at happier times. Then there’s McCartney’s 1982 ode to John Lennon, “Here Today,” in which he expresses his love for his dead friend in a way he could never do in real life. (“Don’t wait to tell the people you care about most that you love them,” McCartney urged the tearful SoFi audience.) Both songs have become staples of Macca’s sentimental repertoire over the years, but a virtual “The duet between McCartney and Lennon, I have a feeling, by return Director Jackson, especially influential.McCartney at some point real Back in 1958 with “In Site of All the Danger,” the first song ever recorded by the Quarry, featuring McCartney, Lennon, Harrison, pianist John “Duff” Lowe, and drummers The Beatles prototype Colin Hanton.
Fans may hope that the surviving Beatle Gostal makes another unexpected appearance, Who played for ‘Helter Skelter’ on the final day of McCartney’s 2019 Dodger Stadium tour in Los Angeles. But all four Beatles felt it on Friday, as McCartney joined his guitarist Rusty Anderson, guitar/bassist Brian Ray, multi-instrumentalist Paul “Wix” Wickens and drummer Abe Laboriel The longtime band lineup played an astonishing 21 Fab Four Juniors together.
Mainly switching between his signature Hofna basses and psychedelic electric pianos, McCartney takes audiences (including Muse’s Matt Bellamy and Cop’s Stuart Copeland) through multiple “Kumbaya”-style singles. Songs (“Let It Be”, “Hey Jude” and “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” seem to be fan favorites). When he and his band appeared in the encore of “Golden Slumbers”/”Carry That Weight”/”The End”, waving the Ukrainian, American, British, California and LGBTQ+ rainbow flags, it was impossible not to be more than a little in awe , even a little choked up. The influence of McCartney and the Beatles is sometimes almost easy to take for granted, but nobody took it for granted tonight.
